Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill John Stuart Mill, in his Utilitarianism, turns morality into a practical problem. His moral theory is designed to help one evaluate his moral principles and senisibilites and be able to ajudicate conflictions in moral conflicts. Mill postulates that actions are right so far as they tend to promote happiness and minimize pain. This theory manifests itself as an impartial promotion of happiness. Morally right actions are ones which promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number number of people and reduce pain. Utilitarian moral theories need to be coupled with theories of well-being, so that we can point to what is being maximized through the moral theorys operation. In fact there are certain times when Mills adherence to the Substantive Goods Theory is put into doubt because of cewrtain ideas of the former two which supp ort what Mill says. Despite such similarties, the Substantive Goods Theory manifests itself as a better fit for what Mill says about well-being and how society should encourage people to pursue well-being. Additionally, that theory is consistent with my personal beliefs about what it means to lead a good life. In Utilitarianism, Mill addresses many objections to his general moral theory of promoting happiness and decreasing pain. Through Mills rebuttals to the objections, his ideas about well-being become clear. Although his moral theory is important to understand the basis upon which his ideas about well-being sit, they miust stand alone so that one can determine to which theory of well-being Mill adhered. Mills ideas about well-being spring from his explanation of the difference between contentment and true happiness. Leading up to his ultimate discussion of the distinction, Mill attempts to clear up misunderstandings about what pleasure and happiness are. The judgment of this landmark case gave effect to the customary laws which had been present at the time of settlement and had survived the reception of the English Law (Grace, 2015). Such customary laws included the indigenous land title and subsequent land rights to lands which had been extinguished by the Crown. In this caseEddie Mabo, David Passi and James Rice on behalf of all Mariam people had started proceedings in the Australian High Court in response to the Queensland Amendment Act 1982. However, the Mer Islanders refused accept such land grant. The plaintiffs Eddie Koiki Mabo, Reverend David Passi, Celuia Mapoo Salee, Sam Passi and James Rice claimed native title to the Murray Islands. The chief justice Sir Harry Gibbsreferred to the case for hearing in the Supreme Court on 27th February 1986 for the purpose of determining the facts of the case. The Supreme court judge who head the case was Justice Moynihan. This case was withheld when Eddie Mabo and the people of Meriam islands brought to the high court of Australia a second case challenging the constitutional validity of the Queensland Coast Islands Declaratory Act 1985. This second case which was brought to the High Court by Mabo and the people of Mer islands popularly came to be known as the case Mabo v. Queensland (No. 2). The judgment in the second case as passed by the High Court inserted in the Australian law the legal doctrine of native title (Davies, 2017). The High Court while giving the verdict recognized the that indigenous people of Australia had inhabited the lands of Australia for thousands of years and had enjoyed the rights of the land by their own customs and laws. However, they had been dispossessed from their land as colonization took place. The Court held that this disposition of the Australian Aboriginals underwrote the development of Australia as a nation. This case introduced a new doctrine which had replaced the old doctrine of terra nillius. It was also held that British claims of possession of Australian Territory were unjustified as it was based on a wrongful presumption that there was no law which governing the use of lands. The Nat ive Title Act 1993 (Cth) was passed in the following year of the judgment of the aforementioned case (Legislation.gov.au 2018). This act allowed the aboriginal Australians and the Natives of Torres strait islanders to claim rights to their lands and also claim compensation. Legal Effects of Mabo Case in Australian Law It can be stated that The Mabo cases in Australia are landmark cases. The judgment as passed in the cases was perceived as a victory to the indigenous Australians. However, the verdict was not well received by some indigenous people. A long battle had been going on between the indigenous Australians and the government of the commonwealth since the first settlers had settled in Australia and claimed the land by terra nullius even though the land was not uninhabited (Davies 2017). The indigenous Australians had been dispossessed even though they had a devoted relationship with the land and had set up families. In 1992 the following the decision of the Mabo case the High Court of Australia rejected the doctrine of terra nullius and had argued that the aforementioned doctrine had been wrongfully implemented by the colonizers to deprive the indigenous Australians of their right in their land (Kramer 2016). While rejecting the doctrine, the court recognized the native title had existed eve n before the colonizers had settled in the country. The judgment of the case came to be known as the Mabo decision andhas een regarded as a very controversial decision. However the decision raised a lot of controversy as no proper definition of the term native title had earlier existed in Australia (Duff 2017). It can be said that processing applications for claim of Native title usually takes many years and is a complicated process. The Native Title Act which was passed subsequent to the verdict given in the landmark case Mabo vs Queensland (No.2) to give rights to the indigenous Australians to claim their land. The purpose of the Native title act was to recognize the connection of the Indigenous Australians with their land. He probably had an attraction to Marthas simple nature and beauty, Martha was about five feet tall with dark eyes and dark hair, so he asked her to dance. Suddenly simple Martha Dandridge had become the belle of the ball; she was dancing with one of the richest bachelors in Virginia. After a few years Martha and Daniel began to see more of each other and there was talk of an engagement, but first Daniel had to send off for his fathers permission to do so. Although Daniel was a man twenty years older than Martha was he was still under the rule of his father who had become bitter by his marriage and was angry with Daniel for refusing to marry the girl that his father had wished him to. Daniel came back to Martha with a grim look and had decided to give up; he thought it no use to argue with his father. His father was determined that he would not marry anyone that he didnt approve of, especially Martha for she wasnt even known; it was just impossible for his son to marry a nobody. Hurt, Martha went home to her mother in tears. She felt as if she wasnt good enough for the old man. Many athletes are in college just to play their sport, and do not care about their academic performance. Eventually, the limelight will fade and professional athletes will become has-beens left to reminisce about their â€Å"glory days.† Often in college, athletes will do just enough to get by and not care about what their academic performance means. Unfortunately, especially in some larger schools, preferential treatment for athletes does exist among the faculty. This also gives athletes the advantage at the time, but hurts them in the long run. Advertisment Essay â€Å"Someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.† Trash can be used to describe many things, things like objects dirty or worthless. We rarely think of trash to be used to describe a person for their worth or their looks. The media today tries to portray a â€Å"perfect† image of what a person should look like when in reality people are beautiful just the way they are. Nobody is trash. The advertisement that I choose was one that was promoting Gold’s Gym. The picture was of a black metal trashcan tilted ever so slightly to the left, but standing firmly in powdery whitish yellow beach sand. The trashcans shadow lays to the right of it assuming that it is a little past mid day. The background is bursting with colors ranging from white, blue, and green in the ocean and a baby blue in the sky with wispy clouds barely covering the sky. The main object in the picture is the trashcan. It is a black metal can with a yellow color wrapped around the middle third of it. In the yellow, a text is written in black and it says, â€Å"Keep Our Beaches Beautiful† and in smaller font says, â€Å"(and pick up the trash, too).† Finally, on the bottom â€Å"Gold’s Gym† is written in bold gold font, on the black trashcan, a little smaller than the other font. The colors are vivid in contrast, making the picture warm and it creates instant happiness. The bright yellow stands out from the black trashcan causing the observer to first focus on the trashcan and the writing. Once the observer reads what the trashcan has to say, they then look out onto the ideal ocean with the almost perfect sand that looks as playable as a puppy and as soft as a pillow. That is the view of beautiful. The ad has a double meaning to it. The trashcan is there to keep the beach clean from all the trash. Beautiful. The writing on the trashcan saying, â€Å"Keep our beaches beautiful† and then Gold’s Gym advertising written under that is promoting that people go and workout at the gym to be fit. Beautiful. What is beauty? According to this, the ad claims that at least a part of being beautiful is working out and looking fit. Is that really true beauty? People work hard to become that â€Å"perfect† image that society and the media has embedded in our minds. This was most likely a hugely successful ad, solely because it hit close to home with many people who have low self-esteem. â€Å"The ‘Beach body’ can be achieved by signing up for a year at Gold’s Gym,† is what people are thinking when they see this ad. The beach looks so beautiful in the ad that people become motivated enough to work out so they look â€Å"good† at the beach rather than being the â€Å"trash† on the beach. They just want to fit it and have a sense of belonging. Are people really trash? The ad sure thinks so. Even though the trashcan aspect is directed more so to the actual trash that is on the beach, it still symbolizes that people are trash if they are ugly. A person can become beautiful by attending Gold’s Gym, so why wouldn’t they just do that if that were all they needed to become beautiful? People nowadays are so focused on body image; women start having eating disorders in order to be â€Å"beautiful†, while men think they are only beautiful if they have a six pack or huge muscles. The advertiser at least thinks that he is good looking or fit in order to have credibility. They have a high sense of self-esteem because they think that being beautiful relates solely to a person’s appearance rather then as a whole, both inside and out. This ad is about more than just keeping beaches clean and promoting Gold’s Gym, it is about the image of people. The media has twisted the real image of people so much so that if a person doesn’t look good then they are called â€Å"trash.† Are people really trash?

The History and Future of Computers and the Internet The early history of mechanical computers really began to take off in the mid 1940’s. Between 1943-1946 the first true general purpose electronic computer was made. Constructed at the University of Pennsylvania the computer was named the ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer.) The ENIAC was developed by two important keystone species, John William Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert Jr. The ENIAC was absolutely humongous; it stood 10 feet tall and occupied 1,000 square feet of floor space. On top of that it weighed in at 30 tons! The major problem with the ENIAC was its reliability. The ENIAC ran on vacuum tubes, and these vacuum tubes constantly burnt out causing people to replace them on an average of 50 times a day. Both Mauchly and Eckert realized that the ENIAC needed major improvement and began working on other designs. Unfortunately due to several members abandoning the project to pursue other jobs their next computer, the EDVAC never really took off. The first commercially successful computer to hit the market was in 1951. The computer was named the UNIVAC. The UNIVAC was manufactured by Remington Rand and was influenced by Eckert and Mauchly. The Univac was 943 cubic feet and ran on serial vacuum tubes. 46 UNIVAC’s were built for government and business uses. The UNIVAC was able to show its superiority over other technological advances like the IBM punch card. Although the UNIVAC was much faster than the punch card it took a year for people to fully accept the UNIVAC. The UNIVAC is also known for predicting the Eisenhower election, thus making it a household name. With the UNIVAC gaining popularity some people began thinking that the computer was the next step towards a better technological future. Tom Watson Jr. was one of the few that saw a great future in computers. After struggling to convince his father that the computer was the next step in business Watson Jr. began development on the IBM 650. While the IBM 650 wasn’t technologically better than the UNIVAC it did sell better. Tom Watson Jr. brought an IBM company which previously declared that computers will have no place in the homes of America to a thriving business. While computers seemed to be doing wonders for businesses it didn’t truly ‘hit home’ until the birth of the internet.
