Scaling Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Scaling Study - Essay Example The study is seen to be useful by instructors as feedback about their teaching, by students to select a particular course, and by university administrators for use in employee selection. The questionnaire is reliable in that the students were given the questionnaire at the end of the teaching session. The comments about instructor and course and suggestions about how to improve the course further establish the validity of the questionnaire. The students seem to be in a better position to comment and criticize the course content than the syllabus designers. The students center their attention on how well they were taught and what they learned. So the questionnaire is effective in understanding if the course and the instructor are on the right track: An evaluation often points to problem identification rather than problem solution, and thus should be considered one part of a continuous process of examination, adaption, improvement and evaluation. (Examples and Research on the Use of Questionnaires) The students were asked to determine the appropriateness of the recommended texts and the proposed aims and purpose of the course content. These questions received favorable ratings from the students. Barring a single student all the students found the course content very interesting and relevant. ... Almost all the students rated the instructor very poorly. The report showed that there was lack of enthusiasm in the instructor's way of teaching and he did not provide sufficient illustrations while teaching which made some students lose interest in the course. Also the instructor made little effort in helping the students who had difficulty in the course. The use of aids though helpful was not sufficient in illustrating the course contents. As a result the course was not difficult for those who are expected to achieve higher grades. But for certain students who found the course content very interesting but were not expected to achieve higher grades, the lack of effective teaching methodology made it very difficult to understand the course content. The students were also asked open ended questions as to what changes in the curriculum or the teaching method would be more effective. Almost all of them suggested little or no changes in the course content. But as far as teaching was con cerned there were many comments and suggestions. Thus the questionnaire was helpful in pointing out where the weakness lay. It helped in determining the need for a change in teaching methodology and not the course content. A systematic program of evaluation of teaching staff is more than a management information system, because the focus is value, worth, merit, and effectiveness and an interactive communication network among the parties (teaching staff and administrators) is a crucial part of an evaluation program. (Examples and Research on the Use of Questionnaires) Recommendations by students Questions like encouragement of class discussions by the instructor received poor ratings. Similarly use of aids and personal help to

Advertisment Essay Example for Free

Advertisment Essay â€Å"Someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.† Trash can be used to describe many things, things like objects dirty or worthless. We rarely think of trash to be used to describe a person for their worth or their looks. The media today tries to portray a â€Å"perfect† image of what a person should look like when in reality people are beautiful just the way they are. Nobody is trash. The advertisement that I choose was one that was promoting Gold’s Gym. The picture was of a black metal trashcan tilted ever so slightly to the left, but standing firmly in powdery whitish yellow beach sand. The trashcans shadow lays to the right of it assuming that it is a little past mid day. The background is bursting with colors ranging from white, blue, and green in the ocean and a baby blue in the sky with wispy clouds barely covering the sky. The main object in the picture is the trashcan. It is a black metal can with a yellow color wrapped around the middle third of it. In the yellow, a text is written in black and it says, â€Å"Keep Our Beaches Beautiful† and in smaller font says, â€Å"(and pick up the trash, too).† Finally, on the bottom â€Å"Gold’s Gym† is written in bold gold font, on the black trashcan, a little smaller than the other font. The colors are vivid in contrast, making the picture warm and it creates instant happiness. The bright yellow stands out from the black trashcan causing the observer to first focus on the trashcan and the writing. Once the observer reads what the trashcan has to say, they then look out onto the ideal ocean with the almost perfect sand that looks as playable as a puppy and as soft as a pillow. That is the view of beautiful. The ad has a double meaning to it. The trashcan is there to keep the beach clean from all the trash. Beautiful. The writing on the trashcan saying, â€Å"Keep our beaches beautiful† and then Gold’s Gym advertising written under that is promoting that people go and workout at the gym to be fit. Beautiful. What is beauty? According to this, the ad claims that at least a part of being beautiful is working out and looking fit. Is that really true beauty? People work hard to become that â€Å"perfect† image that society and the media has embedded in our minds. This was most likely a hugely successful ad, solely because it hit close to home with many people who have low self-esteem. â€Å"The ‘Beach body’ can be achieved by signing up for a year at Gold’s Gym,† is what people are thinking when they see this ad. The beach looks so beautiful in the ad that people become motivated enough to work out so they look â€Å"good† at the beach rather than being the â€Å"trash† on the beach. They just want to fit it and have a sense of belonging. Are people really trash? The ad sure thinks so. Even though the trashcan aspect is directed more so to the actual trash that is on the beach, it still symbolizes that people are trash if they are ugly. A person can become beautiful by attending Gold’s Gym, so why wouldn’t they just do that if that were all they needed to become beautiful? People nowadays are so focused on body image; women start having eating disorders in order to be â€Å"beautiful†, while men think they are only beautiful if they have a six pack or huge muscles. The advertiser at least thinks that he is good looking or fit in order to have credibility. They have a high sense of self-esteem because they think that being beautiful relates solely to a person’s appearance rather then as a whole, both inside and out. This ad is about more than just keeping beaches clean and promoting Gold’s Gym, it is about the image of people. The media has twisted the real image of people so much so that if a person doesn’t look good then they are called â€Å"trash.† Are people really trash?

The History and Future of Computers and the Internet :: Expository Essays Research Papers

The History and Future of Computers and the Internet The early history of mechanical computers really began to take off in the mid 1940’s. Between 1943-1946 the first true general purpose electronic computer was made. Constructed at the University of Pennsylvania the computer was named the ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer.) The ENIAC was developed by two important keystone species, John William Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert Jr. The ENIAC was absolutely humongous; it stood 10 feet tall and occupied 1,000 square feet of floor space. On top of that it weighed in at 30 tons! The major problem with the ENIAC was its reliability. The ENIAC ran on vacuum tubes, and these vacuum tubes constantly burnt out causing people to replace them on an average of 50 times a day. Both Mauchly and Eckert realized that the ENIAC needed major improvement and began working on other designs. Unfortunately due to several members abandoning the project to pursue other jobs their next computer, the EDVAC never really took off. The first commercially successful computer to hit the market was in 1951. The computer was named the UNIVAC. The UNIVAC was manufactured by Remington Rand and was influenced by Eckert and Mauchly. The Univac was 943 cubic feet and ran on serial vacuum tubes. 46 UNIVAC’s were built for government and business uses. The UNIVAC was able to show its superiority over other technological advances like the IBM punch card. Although the UNIVAC was much faster than the punch card it took a year for people to fully accept the UNIVAC. The UNIVAC is also known for predicting the Eisenhower election, thus making it a household name. With the UNIVAC gaining popularity some people began thinking that the computer was the next step towards a better technological future. Tom Watson Jr. was one of the few that saw a great future in computers. After struggling to convince his father that the computer was the next step in business Watson Jr. began development on the IBM 650. While the IBM 650 wasn’t technologically better than the UNIVAC it did sell better. Tom Watson Jr. brought an IBM company which previously declared that computers will have no place in the homes of America to a thriving business. While computers seemed to be doing wonders for businesses it didn’t truly ‘hit home’ until the birth of the internet. The Birth of the Internet Many people forget why the internet was originally formed.

This type of product has a very big demand in the world especially in the Middle East. A study in 1937 survey revealed that over 50% of teenage girls fought with their pa rents over lipstick. This means that lipsticks have been a very good product for the companies to sell since lipsticks has a strong demand in all over the world. Even in Kuwait, after we studied the market in Kuwait we found that most of the women and girls buy lipstick and they prefer to buy lipstick more than buying any other cosmetics. During the Islamic Golden Age the notable Arab Andalusian cosmetologist Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi invented solid lipsticks, which were perfumed sticks rolled and pressed in special molds, and he described them in his Al-Tasrif. That shows us the importance of the rouge and lipsticks in the Arabian Culture. Also after studying the market in Kuwait and the demand of the lipsticks we found that the ages who uses lipstick are from 13-35 years old which means a bigger target market for us and this is a very good number and if we succeeded in getting 20% of the market interesting in our product we will be making a very good sales and making a good number of revenue. Also one of the reasons why did we choose lipsticks is that lipsticks are used everyday not like other cosmetics and make up which are used in a special occasion and that increases the demand of lipsticks in the country pecially in Kuwait because most of the girls and women here they don’t get out of the house unless they have some make up on which shows you the importance of the makeup and cosmetics in Kuwait Market. The last reason why we choose lipsticks and lips treatment product is that Avon Company has many types of lipsticks and many varieties of lipsticks. That’s an advantage for us because we will bring many types of lipsticks so we can satisfy all the needs and wants of the customers who wants lipsticks and we can offer them more than one type. Also we will be bringing eyes products such as eye liner, mascara and eye shadow. These products also have a strong demand in Kuwait market and the eye product is as much important as the lips products. Thatâ⠂¬â„¢s not all, we will also bring some make up special product such as foundation which is so important in Kuwait market since the women use it a lot for wedding and other occasions and also blush because it’s also used in the same occasions and even more. In Kuwait Kuwaitis care about perfumes and fragrances so much and I believe that bringing this product to Kuwait market will be the best choice as a beginning. After we launch these products we will be launching more products such as bath and body product, skin care products and hair care products. Process for Halal Certification Even though there is a long hard procedure to follow in terms to certificate your product as a halal product, but it worth it. First of all since we are going to sell our product in Kuwait and Kuwait is an Islamic country we have to sell a halal product and we can’t sell anything that hasâ€Å"haram† ingredients. Also to have a halal product, this will improve the brand image in the m arket and internationally. Also Halal certificate will help us exploring the cross border trade opportunities and it could obtain us the advantage to be better than our competitors and have a competitor advantage. Halal certificate also will help us attracting more customers not only in Kuwait, but internationally also and Halal insignia is a trustworthy and autonomous and dependable. The procedure to make it a Halal Product is: First of all no food served inside the factory to make sure that the factory is always clean.Second, only Halal Ingredient should be in the product and there are no â€Å"Haram† ingredients in it. To make the product Halal it should be: * Free from Alcohol or wine for food. * If it’s not food the alcohol content in the finished product must be less than 0. 5%, but it is better to keep it less than 0. 01%. * Free from filth * Free from animal part, except what has been approved as â€Å"Halal†. * Free from animal fat such as, enzyme, emuls ifier and other fats except what is â€Å"Halal†. * Free from pork or dogThis table shows the Halal and Haram ingredients and also it shows â€Å"Mashbooh† ingredients which mean it is not clear yet if it’s Halal or Haram, but it would be better if we did not use it. Source : Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America| The procedure of Halal Certificate: First we have to fill the application forms and supporting documents includes a detailed of the company’s profile and the local authority’s license, also we have to inform them with all the ingredients that in the product, the address of the manufacture and the name or the suppliers of the ingredients name and address. Also the original status of ingredients, packaging materials, manufactures process and procedures. Second, we have to pay full payment of the certification fees before the inspection and we have to succeed in the physical site inspection includes inspe ction of storage, ingredients, production, general hygiene and quality control. Third, a report will be sent to the evaluation committee and recommendation and then the report will be tabled and evaluated by a committee for issuing Halal Certificate. Then they will give us a validity period of the certificate is only for two years. Then it will be carried out the Halal conformity through inspection, constant monitoring by surprise visit or calling the companies involved. Changes or Improvements for Launching Halal Product Because Kuwait market is an Islamic Market and they follow the rules of â€Å"Alshariyah† that means they usually eat, drink, wear and buy Halal products and the demand on Halal product is huge. Also on the other hand the demand in Kuwait market for the cosmetics is also huge and strong as in Kuwait cosmetics is used every day and its one of the important priority for women and teenagers in Kuwait. If we could take a product with a high demand on it such as co smetics and turn it to Halal cosmetics and also introduce it in an Islamic market such as Kuwait market, you will be doing an excellent business. If we see the demand and supply we will find that the demand of Kuwait market is cosmetics product and they are also demanding Halal product, but unfortunately they didn’t have the opportunity to find Halal cosmetics. Now we will be supplying their demand by offering them Halal cosmetics and if we just monitor the marketing mix well we will be doing a very good business in this market. Every business has its own special marketing plan and strategy to attract the customer and to grab their attention. Every company has its own way how to make the product and all of the marketing mix works with each other in terms to be successful company and to make more sales and profit. There is one important thing that not many of us might be aware of it, which is there might be some changes required to be successful in that market and as we know not all the markets are the same and any strategy that works in a certain place or market might not work in another place. For example when Cheetos Company for cheese curl wanted to expand in China they did not study the market well and after introducing the product in china they was shocked with the big failure they have faced. The reason why Cheetos Company failed in this market is because they didn’t do some changes. In China cheese curl is not famous and even though when they tried it they didn’t like it. After Cheetos company realized the problem they have done a research to find what are the best flavor for China market and they find that Strawberry, blueberry and BBQ flavored are the best to suit this market and when they changed the flavor they succeeded in this market. For our business we also will make some changes since we studied the market well and we think these changes will attract more customers to our business and make it a successful business. 1.Kuwaitis have their own taste in some of the fragrances and perfumes and adding â€Å"Bokhor† smell to the fragrances and perfumes will a very good step in Kuwait Market. 2. Also since our products are Halal product we might add some â€Å"Henna† which is a planet with a nice smell and Kuwaitis also put â€Å"Henna† on their hairs often and they believe that it helps the hair to be stronger, better smelling and shiny. 3. We must create a website in Arabic so customers can read all of the ingredients and what are our products made of in Arabic so they can trust us and feel safe. 4.We will use some Kuwaitis celebrities to represent our makeup and do some commercials for us. 5. Customer Service is a very important thing that we have to look after and we will be collecting our customer’s Mobile number or emails so we can inform them if we have any promotions or discounts. 6. Since we will be doing some commercials and advertisement for our new Halal product we must ha ve an Arabic advertisement and also an English advertisement. 7. We will be publishing flyers that shows how Halal cosmetics are better than regular cosmetics to increase the target market awareness. 8.To ensure that the team or the employees are working affectively we will set a commission for each clerk so we can encourage them to work better. Define three different market segment for Kuwait market place Before we complete our study we should divide the customers into different categories, so we can know what are the expected demands are and so we can meet need or want of these customers. Since satisfying all the customers is almost impossible, so we have to divide the customers into different groups and after dividing them we have to select a part and try to meet the need and want of this part. Now how can we divide the market or split it? We can group the customers based on 3 main groups 1. Geographic 2. Demographic 3. Psychographic 4. Behavioral Now I will discuss three of the s egments and I will rank them based on their viability and likely contribution to the business. 1. Demographic: Age| 18 – 30| Gender| Females| Income| Above 500 K. D| Religion| Muslims| We choose the age of 18-30 because from 18- 25 are likely to buy most of our products and because most of them are in Colleges and universities they will use it more. And from 25-30 are likely to go for weddings and in Kuwait they must have makeup on them when they are going to wedding and that why we will be focusing on this age group. Cosmetics are used by females and also Avon Company is a women company so we will be focusing on women and tries to satisfy their needs and wants. The income should be above 500 K. D because women who have an income which is below 500 K. D will not be able to buy from Avon because they will have a more important priority to do with their salaries and they will prefer to buy from other shops that cheaper than Avon. 2. Psychographic:We will be focusing on the inter est because women who are interested to attend social meeting and family gathering which are a very important part in our society will be more likely to buy make up because this type of women use it more than others. Also we will be focusing on the opinion because we don’t sell only cosmetics, we sell Halal cosmetics and that might make a difference on people who thinks and believe that Halal product are better than other regular product and we will be focusing on this type of women because they care about the ingredients and how did we make our products. . Behavioral: We will be focusing on the usage rate because women who use makeup and cosmetics more than other because they have more occasions so these will be focused on and also brand loyalty because there are some women when they like a certain brand of makeup they don’t tend to change it and they became loyal to this brand and this type of women who we are looking for. Also Occasions is one of the important parts of behavioral segment because there are women who don’t use make unless they have an occasion and this type we can satisfy them by offering them promotions for a whole set of cosmetics and they will have the opportunity to buy it and keep it till they use it. Which segments are likely to purchase our product? Now if we want to see which segment is more likely to buy my product and ranking them from one to three, Number one will be Demographic segment because they are likely to buy my products since the religion is included and Halal product means that this product is the best product for Muslims and also because they are women and the age of 18-30 is the best age to buy from us.Second, Psychographic women who are interested in family gathering and social meeting and gathering are likely to buy our product more than the others because they use the makeup more than others and those whom we want to attract and they will be likely to buy our product because we can offer them speci al discount and promotions if they visited us more and more. The last one is Behavioral because women who uses the cosmetics based on usage rate and brand loyalty won’t buy our product so much because cosmetics products isn’t used for one day, it’s used for a period of time and we want women who use more so they will buy more and this is the reason why behavioral segment comes in the last place. After segmenting the market, now we can say that our best customer is a Muslim women between 18-26 years old who is interested in social activities and meeting and also interested in family gathering with an income above 500 K.D and she thinks that Halal cosmetics are better than regular cosmetics because they don’t have Haram ingredients and it is been produced and manufacture in a better way. This step has given the company an opportunity to prove that Avon Company is a real Women Company and they care about women. By introducing Halal product they have attract more customers to their brand name.Every company has its own Vision and Mission and now we will see what did the Halal cosmetics change in the Vision and the Mission? Halal cosmetics have changed the company to be a better company that cares about all the religions and try to have the best ingredients and satisfy the women needs globally. By providing Halal cosmetics Avon proved what they have promised when they said they wanted â€Å"To be the Company that best understands and satisfies the product, service and self-fulfillment needs of women— globally. Halal products have worked in make the Avon Company image better and trustworthy and also it helps the company with their mission such as being the most admired company and also by introducing Halal product to the company they’re achieving their mission to be the largest women’s foundation and the women choice of buying and to be the global beauty leader. Providing the same quality of service to existing customers Customer service is a very important part that we have to focus on because customer service is in every purch ase the customer does.We all have stories with bad customer service and good customer service and we used to share it with others. We know that word of mouth could be the reason why customers always come back for your store or company or it could be a reason of loosing many customers by treating them poorly. Warren Buffett said: â€Å"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. To be honest with the customers is the best way to ensure a good customer service.Being honest with the customers and communicating with the customers when there is any mistake that happens ensures you that the mistake will never happen again and this is an advantage of being honest. There are few steps if we follow them we will continue to provide continued quality of service. 1. Response quickly When something goes wrong we have to quickly call the customer and explain him what happened and explain him our company’s mistake. If We have to communicate with a large number of cu stomers, then we have to send them an email explaining them what’s the company’s mistake and we will send them an email because it’s faster if we are communicating with a large number of customers. 2. Set a Realistic Expectation If we promised the customers something that didn’t delivered as we promised, the customers will feel disappointed and we will lose their trust in our words and promises, so we must do what we have committed to do even if it takes some arm wrestling with other departments who want to launch a product to the market before its been ready. . Respect The customers are so important to any company, without them we will not have any company, so all of our staff should love the customers even though there are some customers who will push the limits, but with the philosophy of respecting our customer and appreciating him we will get the customers satisfaction and we will be providing good customer service. From Gandhi, â€Å"We must become the change we want to see in the world. † How could we know if the customers are satisfied with our customer service or no? We have many ways to see if the customers are satisfied or no.First, after purchasing we can ask them to do a survey for us and also by doing an annual survey is a good way to ask. Also a follow up calls from the call center department will be a good idea. Measuring our services is an important thing to do because it gives us the opportunity to improve our company performance or even to save our company of losing. We will do some steps to know if customers are satisfied or no. How can we keep the customer satisfied? We can keep the customer happy and satisfied by following also several rules. If we follow these rules we will be able to satisfy the customers and ensure that they are happy with our services. 1. Service level: For the call center the first call is just like the first impression for the customer. The customers will know if the service is good or bad from the first call. Also for the shipment and delivery we must give a very good impression for the customer from the first day. 2. Response time: The response time is a very important tool we should use to ensure that our customers are satisfied and what we mean by response time is that when any customer has a question we should answer him as soon as possible. This will help us to keep the customers satisfied. 3. Give the customer his time: Some of the companies tell their agents to keep the calls short, but this is not helping the company because this might send a wrong message to the customer, so we will be giving the customer plenty of time to feel free to ask about anything he want and also our agent will give the customers a full detailed answers. After doing all these steps we will be sure that we are provide the same quality of service to existing customers with the introduction of the new Halal product.Major Promotional Activities & RMOI: This table shows our pro motion major activities and also it shows which promotion we will use in each month before launching the product and after launching the product. We have choose three main promotions activities section and under each of them we have choose a certain promotions ways that we thinks it best deliver our message to our target market. | October| November| December| January| February| March| April| May| Events & Exhibitions| | | | | | | | | Media| | | | | | | | | Internet| | | | | | | | |We will be launching the product in December 2012. In October and November these two months are pre launch months and we will be doing some exhibitions and advertisement on these two months to create product awareness before launching it. When we launch the product we want to reach the highest number of target market so we will be using the three major promotions to reach our target market on December. Event | October| November| December| January| February| March| April| May| Cost| Exhibitions in Mall| | | | | | | | | 3,200 K. D|Trade Show| | | | | | | | | 2,000 K. D| For the Event we will be using this promotion in October before launching the product, December when we launch the product, January, March and May. We will be using two types of Events promotions. The first one is Exhibition in malls such as Avenues, Marina Mall and Al Fanar Mall. The second one is the Trade show where there are some exhibitions for cosmetics brand where many cosmetics brand rent a booth and promote their product. This table will show you what Event promotions we will use and when. Media October| November| December| January| February| March| April| May| Cost| Catalogs | | | | | | | | | 400 K. D| Magazines| | | | | | | | | 600 K. D| Radio| | | | | | | | | 1,200 K. D| Flyers| | | | | | | | | 400 K. D| For the Media Promotions we will be using 4 types of media. The first thing we will be printing some Catalogs of our product and a brief description of our company and what are the Halal Products. The se cond thing we will be doing some advertisement in some Magazine that targeted the women such as Laki Magazine, Al-Mara’a Magazine and Sayedati Magazine. Also Radio is a good way to advertise for such a product, we will be doing some commercial advertisements in Marina FM because there is a study that said 78% of the channel listeners are females and that was said during one of the programs in Marina FM. Also flyers will be printed and we will be publishing them in some salons and Malls. Internet | October| November| December| January| February| March| April| May| Cost| Social Network| | | | | | | | | 600 K. D| Blogs| | | | | | | | | 150 K. D| For the Internet Promotions we will be using two methods.First we will be using Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube. We choose this method because nowadays many people are being a part in the social networks websites and in Kuwait it has been a very attractive way to reach your target market. Also some of the so cial networks could offer you to advertise just for your target market. For example, if your target market is female age from 18 to 30 and their interests are Cosmetics, The social network can advertise your promotion just for the target you choose. The second method we will be using is Blogs since now many people are interested in blogs and they can share their opinion and get new ideas. This method might be used to educate our target market about Halal Product and also we might use it to tell more about our products and company. This is table shows our promotional budget for 8 month before and after launching the product and also we have mention the expected ROMI for these 8 months. Promotion Method| Promotion Budget| Events Promotions| 5,200 K. D| Media Promotions| 2,600 K. D| Internet Promotions | 750 K. D| Total| 8,550 K. D|Return On Marketing Investment| 17,100 K. D| As we can see the last table shows each promotion method budget and also it shows the total budget for the Marke ting plan in 8 months including the two pre launch months. It also shows you that the ROMI is 17,100 K. D because what are we planning for is in every 1 K. D we pay for promotions we want to get 2 K. D for example, When we budgeted 5,200 K. D in the Event promotions we want to make sales of 10,400 K. D and we did that because after making sales of 10,400 K. D we have to pay all of our expenses and we will have the rest as a profit. The best way to make sure that you are making profit is to make sure that the ROMI is 50% or above. One Year Budget and ROI: This table shows which promotions we are going to use for a period of 14 months include the two months of the pre launch period. This table shows in details which promotion we are going to use and when also it shows how much each promotion cost. Promotion Method| Promotion Budget For one year + Pre launch 2 months | Events Promotions| 7,000 K. D| Media Promotions| 3,800 K. D| Internet Promotions | 1,400 K. D| Educational Promotions| 1,500 K. D| Total| 13,700 K.D| Return On Marketing Investment| 27,400 K. D| This table shows the promotional budget for a period of 14 months including the 2 months before launching the product. As we mentioned before in the report we always assume that our return on investment will be the double because we usually set a plan to get 2 K. D for every 1 K. D we invest in promotions and marketing. Sales| 133,000 K. D| | COGS| 80,000 K. D| | | | 53,000 K. D| Gross Profit| 53,000 K. D| | Expenses: * Sales Expenses: 13,700 * Operation Expenses: 6,000 * Financial Expenses 5,000| 24,700 K.D | | Net Profit| | 28,300 K. D| This table shows the sales we make for a period of 14 months, how much did we pay for the goods or product we sell and it shows what expenses did we have and how much each one of them cost us. Also as you can see it tells us how much profit we make over one year. We calculate that by taking how much sales we made minis how much did we pay for the product we sells and then w e will get the Gross profit. Then we take the Gross Profit minis Total Expenses and we will get the Net Profit which means the money we make over a period of time which is in our case 14 month.Competitors: MAC: MAC Company is one of the best names in the cosmetics industry. MAC Company was founded in 1984 in Toronto, Canada by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. The MAC is a short cut of Make-up Art Cosmetics, but its known world-wide as MAC. Frank Angelo was a beauty salon owner and he come up with a makeup line that would be well with photography. The two owners use to cook the cosmetics in their own kitchen and most of their clients were artist, models, photographer. Strength: * Strong Brand Name * Brand Loyalty * Many Branches in KuwaitWeaknesses: * Uncomfortable products * Potential skin irritants products * No anti-blemish products * Poor customer service * Not many Advertisement L’Oreal: L’Oreal is the world largest cosmetics and Beauty Company. It was founded in 190 9 by the French chemist Eugene Schuller in France. L’Oreal has a variety of products such as hair color, skin care, sun protection, makeup, perfumes and hair care. L’Oreal reached the top 100 Brand in the industry which means it is one of the leading cosmetics company in the cosmetics industry. Strength: Many distribution channels sells their products in Kuwait, but they don't have a store here * Many Advertisement * Many varieties of products line * Many products for men * Their product almost in every super market in Kuwait Weaknesses: * No experts in Makeup and no makeup artist * No store for L'Oreal they only supply other stores with their products * They are focusing on hair product and less focusing in cosmetics Threats: There are few threats that our company is facing from MAC and L'Oreal. 1. They have a good customer base Customers prefer to try something have been in the market for long time then trying new thing specially for cosmetics products so it might be hard for us to attract and get customers interested in our product 2. They might do promotions or discounts on the time we launch our product * They may fail our product launching because they might do discounts or huge promotions on the same time we launch our product in and that could distract the customers for noticing our products 3. They might introduce Halal Product Our competitive advantage is that we have Halal products, if they produce Halal products and launch it in Kuwait most of the customers will buy from them since they are well-known and have a big customer's base. Communicating the changes in the Current Operations with Introduction of Halal Product: When any company introduce new product there will be many changes in the organization. The successful companies are the companies that focus on the new product and also they still focus on the old product and they know how to communicate the changes that happens to the current operation in the organization. For our compa ny we will have 5 main steps to be able to communicate the changes. Who? 5. Employees 6. Management 7. Board of Directors 8. Clients or customers if necessary How? 5. We must communicate through many channels such as writing, intranet of the organization and training and explain more about the change 6. We have to give enough time for people to ask question and know more about the change 7. We have to clearly explain the Vision, Mission and the objectives of our company 8.Explain the reason of the change clearly and what that might benefit the company and the clients If we follow these 4 steps, we will be able to make a very good communication and all the people who works in the company will know why we are changing and how we will change and when also, so they will be on track with any step the company does and they will help to make the introduction of Halal product more successful. Recommendation: Avon Company is a very successful company in the cosmetics industry and it has a ve ry long history in the industry.Avon products are in more than 130 countries and that show us how big and successful the company is. I believe that Avon Company will make a huge success in Kuwait and even in the Middle East because Avon has the perfect products that satisfy the needs of Kuwait market the Middle East market. The Vision of Avon is to be the company that satisfies the needs of the women internationally and globally and by introducing Halal product they are proving to the people that Avon is the Number 1 Company that understands the women need and try to provide the products that satisfy that need. The introduction of Halal Product will make a big change in the marker. Kuwait market is small and Kuwait community is also small and a word of mouth in Kuwait is doing a great job for the companies and organizations. By introducing Halal Product we will get the Kuwait market attention and many people will be talking about it and we will have very good product awareness by wor d of mouth and we will make a big success in this market since it’s an Islamic market and they are trendy people who like to try new things. Hamlet – Hero or Villain

Hamlet comes across as both a hero and a villain throughout ‘Hamlet’ at different intervals. His loyalty, morality, honesty and popularity are certainly heroic traits however one can’t deny his villainous ways in his dealings with Ophelia, his killing of Polonius and most importantly his delaying of killing Claudius. Hamlet is full of faults yet full of honourable intentions. His negative qualities are slim compared to his heroic qualities therefore I believe Hamlet to be a hero, a â€Å"prince among men†. When we first meet Hamlet, he is dressed all in black and conveys all the â€Å"moods, forms and shapes of grief†.This depression is caused by his father’s recent death. Gertrude, his mother and Claudius, his uncle have noticed however Hamlet’s melancholy is much more intense than he is letting on â€Å"too too sullied flesh would melt†. He’s unable to forget his father even when all those around him have resumed their m erry lives. â€Å"I shall not look upon his like again†. This demonstrates the loyal side of the prince. His grief is further intensified by the cold-hearted actions of his mother. Gertrude married her brother in law, Claudius â€Å"within a month† of her husband’s death.Hamlet is unable to understand her disloyalty â€Å"a beast that wants discourse of reason would have mourned longer†. He believes he is living in a society with no standards and so becomes disillusioned with life â€Å"how weary, stale flat and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world†. His loyalty is certainly a heroic trait. The anger he felt towards his mother had a very a negative effect on a Hamlet. He began to feel anger at women as a whole which leads me to his villainous dealings with Ophelia. Hamlet feels neglected when Ophelia as ordered by her father, Polonius repels his letters. He condemns all women with the criticism of moral fickleness â€Å"fraility thy n ame is woman†. He hates Ophelia one moment and longs to engage in sexual intimacy with her the next. â€Å"Lie between maids’ legs†. He mistreats her with heartless and demeaning behaviour. In the nunnery scene he denies he ever loved her and tells her â€Å"get thee to a nunnery†. His inconsistent treating of Ophelia eventually drives her to insanity. The actual recognition of his love for Ophelia can only come when Hamlet realizes that she is dead, and free from her tainted womanly trappings â€Å"I lov’d Ophelia†.This is without doubt one of the most villainous qualities of Hamlet. His cruel treating of Ophelia however can also be seen as a heroic trait. He is honest about his feelings towards her. He is honest throughout the whole play, which is rare in ‘Hamlet’ as most of the characters live their lives through deception. He doesn’t once hide his hatred of Claudius â€Å"a little more than kin and less than kind†, he is also honest of his disliking of Polonius when he says his words have no substance â€Å"words words word†.He eventually tells his mother how disgusted he is with her marriage â€Å"O shame, where is thy blush? † and admits he treated her with cruelty â€Å"I must be cruel only to be kind†. He is even honest about his own inaction as he â€Å"lets all sleep†. His honesty throughout the play is admirable and only further proves him to be a hero. He is without doubt a man of high morals which is an important feature of a hero. He agrees to avenge his father even though he almost crushed with the burden. â€Å"oh cursed spite that ever I was born to set it right†.It is clear that he does not want to murder but accepts the task nonetheless â€Å"I have sworn’t†. He also apologises to Laertes for killing Polonius and asks for forgiveness. â€Å"give me your pardon, sir I have done you wrong†. His moral character is what I m ost admire about Hamlet. However Hamlet’s bravery for accepting the burden of revenge only heightens our awareness of his most negative quality, inaction. Faced with evidence that his uncle murdered his father, Hamlet becomes obsessed with proving his uncle’s guilt. He delays the moment of revenge for as long as he possibly can. He even passes up the perfect chance to kill Claudius in the courtyard when he is praying claiming if he kills him now he is only sending him to heaven. â€Å"this is hire and salary, not revenge†. Hamlet is aware of his inaction and is very self-critical of it. He admires the player’s passion in the play and become annoyed at himself for being â€Å"unpregnant of my cause†. He is made further aware of his inaction when the young Fortinbras fights for land â€Å"that had nothing in but the name† while he â€Å"lets all sleep†.His procrastination is his biggest fault and is his ultimate downfall in the play. Ina ction is certainly not a heroic characteristic. After Hamlet returns from England he is a changed man. He tells how Horatio how â€Å"there’s a divinity that shapes our ends†. It is becoming clear that Hamlet now sees the role of avenger in a different light than he did earlier in the play. As a true hero he is conscious of the fact that he is acting as an agent of justice. This new attitude remains with Hamlet right through to the play’s conclusion.Claudius invites him to engage in a duel with Laertes and Hamlet freely embraces the challenge. Hamlet seems to be more self-confident about his own ability to take clear, effective action. We are given the picture of a noble and fine young man in the concluding scenes. He finally gets revenge on Claudius however is stabbed by Laertes by doing so. A true hero who sacrifices himself to bring justice and honesty back to the state of Denmark, even his enemy Fortinbras admits he would have â€Å"proved most royal† for the throne.Hamlet is a truly much loved prince who possesses a vast degree of human virtue and ability and whose death is not only tragic but extremely noble. His villainous qualities, however strong in the beginning, truly evaporate as the play concludes. An honest, loyal, brave and moral man, there is no doubt that Hamlet is a hero. I’d trust him to rule my country any time! A hero is defined in the oxford English dictionary as â€Å"a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits. † You can’t deny it’s the perfect description of Hamlet!

Perspectives of Human Nutrition Essay Sample

Perspectives of Human Nutrition Essay Sample The Perspectives of Human Nutrition Essay Example The Perspectives of Human Nutrition Essay Example Along with air, food is the main source of energy for humans. According to Ogle (2013), food was universally considered as a crucial component of nation building, as important as navies, guns, and bullets. Nowadays, people begin to reconsider their attitude to food; they acknowledge that it is the resource that can be easily exhausted, especially, if the population of Earth will continue to increase with such a speed. The most prominent minds think over the problem of preservation of the existent food and its alternatives so this theme is quite topical nowadays. The following paper aims to discuss the perspectives of the human nutrition. It will also explain how human science fiction-conditioned brains get ready for such major changes. Particularly, the following research paper will explore the functional and synthetic food and its peculiarities, as well as will concentrate on the process of 3D food making as one the most possible ways to get food in future. The Problem of Human Nutrition Is not a Phantom The problem of human nutrition is not as simple as it can seem. In the twentieth century, the human way of life changed greatly during a short time. The physical activity of the overwhelming majority of people sharply reduced as there was no need to engage in hard daily work and expend a lot of energy. However, changing the rhythm of life has led to an ever-growing mental overload, stress and chronic neurosis in the population of most countries of the world. Global processes associated with the development of technology, industry, energy, transport infrastructure, urban growth, the reduction of undeveloped areas, deforestation, and many other phenomena caused by human activity have led to changes in the environment. Moreover, the scarcity of fresh water and its quality is deteriorating in many countries. The number of environmental problems is, unfortunately, only increasing and they are becoming even more acute. Along with these changes, the nature of human nutrition was also radica lly changed. Nowadays, American people are bombarded with various television programs that show where to find the best dinners, cakes and pizzas, and the restaurants that serve the biggest and juiciest burgers (Zimmerman 2012). However, in future, the situation will change dramatically. The development of the food industry and technology contributed to the removal of the most important food and regulatory substances from the most of products. As a result of denaturalization of products (all possible purifications, distillation and refining pumping by preservatives and industrial chemicals, artificial taste substitutes, color and odor), many nutrients disappeared from the natural food. At the same time, adding the artificial substitutes of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, synthetic vitamins and mineral components in the form of compounds, which are hardly absorbed by the body, leads to the development of many diseases, such as allergy, deposition of kidney stones and liver and many other illnesses. The deficit of the major natural biologically active substances in the modern food has led to the situation when, in order to fill this deficit of amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, nucleotides, vitamins, minerals and other vital substances, a person should eat huge a mounts of food. People should â€Å"find the light from the nutritional tunnel† (David 2013). The use of products containing excess animal fats and foods containing large amounts of carbohydrates is growing particularly fast. Today, most of the population receives energy from carbohydrates, especially sugar, the production and consumption of which is growing with enormous speed. As a result of an unbalanced diet, there has occurred a real epidemic of obesity in most countries, which, in turn, leads to a number of serious diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and myocardial infarction. In the next few decades, the world population is going to reach the level of 9 billion people, and the nutrition industry cannot provide so large population with food in its current state. The researchers propose several options to prevent the world’s food crisis, and the usage of functional foods can be a magic stick for the future generations. Functional Foods: Challenges and Opportunities Food can be considered as functional if it contains food components which act positively on one or more specific functions of the body. The researchers define functional foods as something that embraces potentially healthy foods, including any modified food or food ingredients, which can provide health benefits; in addition, they provide the nutrition. According to its supporters, such products contribute to maintaining health, reducing the risk of diseases as well as inhibition of the aging process. A functional food is a notion that is fully consistent with the well-known principle of the father of medicine Hippocrates, who believed that food should be medicine and medicine should be food. The report of the Institute of Food Technologists states that â€Å"Developing functional foods to improve public health requires contributions from ongoing basic and applied research and modifications to the current regulatory framework to facilitate the review of new functional components and their health claims (Institute of Food Technologies n.d.).† Functional food products consist of only useful substances; they do not contain any harmful chemicals in their structure and are completely safe. Unique biotechnology that allows preserving and improving the useful natural properties of vegetable or animal components is usually applied in the production of functional foods. According to Hasler (2002), all foods are functional to some extent because all of them provide taste, aroma and nutritive value (3772). Functional food, in contrast to conventional one, contains more essential biologically active substances, which are always well-balanced with each other. Therefore, functional products have incomparably greater biological value as compared to traditional ones. According to leading scientists, such a food should be widely used for active correction of human nutrition in the XXI century. In the future, functional food, no doubt, will be included in the daily life of each person. This is one of a few ways to solve the global problem of optimization of nutrition, health and life of people. Today, therefore, the efforts of scientists around the world are focused on the development and production of new functional foods. Functional food option is the most effective way of solving the problem of the world’s food crisis. Synthetic Food One more option offered by the nutrition professionals is the development of synthetic food. The idea to construct an ideal food to feed all the hungry people, prevent many diseases and, eventually, change the nature of man seemed extremely attractive. Indeed, human development has led in the past to one of the greatest revolutions, namely, the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture and farming, and in later times to the industrial production of a number of foods. It was assumed that the creation of artificial food will restore the environment, and a problem of critical and non-critical natural situations for crops and the whole humanity will disappear. The famous French chemist Pierre-Eugà ¨ne-Marcellin Berthelot believed that â€Å"The epicure of the future will dine upon artificial meat, artificial flour, and artificial vegetables,† and enjoy the delights of â€Å"artificial† wines, liquors, and tobacco† (Ogle 2013). He opined that organic materials can be easily synthesized and thus manufactured and manipulated in the laboratory (Ogle 2013). The famous scientist also believed that the humanity would no longer need the farms and fields since, most obviously, people would manufacture the products rather than wait for their natural growth. When some reporter asked the chemist â€Å"Do you mean, that all our milk, eggs, meat, and flour †¦ will be made in factories?† Berthelot replied â€Å"Why not if it proves cheaper and better to make the same materials than to grow them?† (Ogle 2013). Like many other scientists, Berthelot knew that this process would not be easy; however, he believed that t he meat would be produced in the form of easy-to-swallow pills. The naysayers criticized his theory, but the scientist replied that the creation of the synthetic food is just an extension of the human progress. Nowadays, more and more scientists say that a safe and healthy meat can be grown in the laboratory. Vitro meat will save humanity from waste and pollution, and animals from suffering. Bill Gates also talks about new food technologies, for example, an organic meat substitute of the company Beyond Meat, which is created by pressing, heating and cooling soy and vegetable fiber which are virtually the same as the usual meat by taste and texture. He also promised that new technologies will not only help to feed the hungry people, but to change the quality and composition of the usual food. Thinking about the future of food, Bill Gates concluded that â€Å"by 2050, the world’s population will grow to more than 9 billion and our appetite for meat will grow along with it.â₠¬ With this in mind, Gates also acknowledged that â€Å"there is no way to produce enough meat for 9 billion people† (Gates 2013). This wise man understands that the humanity needs more options for producing meat, because not everyone can become a vegetarian. Bill Gates offers a few alternatives – such companies as Hampton Creek Foods and Beyond Meat are already working on the experiments with using pressure and heat in order to make the plants look and taste as the meat. After tasting the chicken in Beyond Meat Company, which was cooked from the plants, the New York Times reporter Mark Bittman noticed virtually no difference. He is asking â€Å"Why, in other words, use the poor chicken as a machine to produce meat when you can use a machine to produce â€Å"meat† that seems like chicken?† (Bittman 2012). However, the natural products will be also useful in future. Carot Potera in her article â€Å"Diet and Nutrition: The Artificial Dye Blues† (2010) states that â€Å"some manufacturers are using plant-based coloring agents: â€Å"For example, in the United Kingdom, orange soda Fanta is colored with pumpkin and carrot extracts while the US version uses Red 40 and Yellow 6. McDonald’s strawberry sundaes are colored only with strawberries in Britain, but Red 40 is used in the United States.† It means that different countries have different approaches to nutrition which determine the future of food in these countries. To summarize, the production of unique alternative synthetic foods is a relatively young area but gives enormous profits and can provide food to billions of consumers around the world. Undoubtedly, the production of synthetic foods is one more possible scenario in the development of human nutrition. The Role of 3D Printers in Future Nutrition Nowadays, the wise modern technology has got closer to the food, the most important joy and woe of humanity. In May 2013, NASA announced the development of 3D printing technology of food. Its main idea implied that the astronauts could print ready and delicious dishes instead of eating them out of the tubes during long missions. The initial aim of the joint project of space agencies and ambitious engineering office in Texas was to cook a pizza using the 3D printer, and they succeeded. Apparently, in the near future, three-dimensional printers will replace virtually all the equipment for cooking and fundamentally change the food market. Indeed, due to the process of the global urbanization the soils are exhausted and the humanity should have thought how the modern technologies can improve the situation. That is the main reason why 3D-printers that can print with eatable â€Å"inks† appeared in the world’s market. Three-dimensional printing is no longer to be exotic, and prices for printers are gradually reducing. Nowadays, one can buy a simple model for less than $ 1,000. Inkjet technology implies the possibility to use anything that can flow as ink. Not surprisingly, the 3D-printers are trying to print a delicious and wholesome food. One can already print the imitation of chocolate, fish, carrots, mushrooms, apples, chicken and many other products. Paradoxically, the necessary amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates can be programmed during this process. In order to print any dish from a variety of possible, it is necessary to choose the correct ratio of the components and the corresponding flavors. There are many companies which work in the industry of synthetic foods by using 3D printing and Modern Meadow Company is one of the most successful ones. Sui Ying Teoh opines that â€Å"Modern Meadow, a biotech startup, is working on 3D-printing meat for the masses, and with a big grant incoming, they seem to be well on their way† (Ying Teoh Su i 2012). Undoubtedly, the ability to make any dish of several ingredients with the compact device is fundamentally changing the worlds largest industrial sector – the nutrition. All in all, the humanity has faced a crucial problem of the quality and quantity of food resources. New major companies which are engaged in agricultural technology are working on the creation of perennial crops requiring less fertilizer, herbicide and fuel, compared with the current ones. This can be achieved not only through the introduction of GM organisms, but also due to the simple selection. The agronomists predict the appearance of forgotten cultures such as quinoa, emmer, and also millet that tolerates heat. In addition, the approach to livestock will completely change; the meat will be grown in test tubes that will release the amount of cultivated land which is important for the projected urbanization. Pondering over the perspectives of nutrition, Zimmerman (2012) offers to create the picture of future: â€Å"Picture yourself not too far into the future: you are wearing a small â€Å"dietary watch† that painlessly samples your blood, and downloads the information to your cell phone, which has an app that evaluates the nutrient profile of your blood and then recommends a snack or dinner menu to assure you maintain adequate nutrient levels. What else is not far off?† Actually, everything is possible as one could not even imagine that the machines which would create delicious food would be invented. 3D printers are one more brilliant human invention which makes one step closer to the overcoming of the world food crisis. In conclusion, it is worth noting that it is not the secret that in the future, mankind will face the challenges of global warming. People are waiting for long periods of heat and drought, alternating with large-scale floods. All this does not bode particularly good conditions for livestock and crop production. Moreover, the population of the planet will increase by another two billion people, and the humanity will have to create something to feed them. Scientists are puzzled with the creation of more sustainable vegetables and cereal crops, development of new technologies and the search for alternatives for supply. New trends in biomedical engineering, medicine, processing and cooking all this will affect what people eat. It is quite difficult to predict exactly what will become popular in 50-100 years. Most likely, it will be something that exists at the moment, but which is not being used on a large scale, so that some predictions still can be possible. In order to avoid the prob lem mentioned above the researchers developed a lot of theories. One of these theories is called functional food and it contains opportunities and challenges as well. The other one is creating synthetic foods; it will allow combining the already existing tastes with the new ones. It will help to replace the expensive food resources with the cheaper ones. 3D food making is one more option which is aimed at overwhelming the world’s food crisis. I believe that only a successful combination of all these options will lead the humanity to the bright future.

picking cotton essay Essays

picking cotton essay Essays picking cotton essay Paper picking cotton essay Paper Let The Truth Finally Be Revealed Jennifer Thompson was a straight-A student at Elon University in Burlington, North Carolina. She had her life all planned out: maintain straight As, graduate with a 4. 0 GPA, and marry her boyfriend, Paul. Jennifer said frightened Who is that? Whose there? I said, Allowing myself to think it must be Paul, or someone playing a stupid joke (12). Then suddenly she looked and saw a stranger in her room. Before she knew it, she was getting raped. During her attack, she made sure she paid attention to her attackers features and his voice. The rapist began to hiss Shut up or Ill cut you! he hissed, while clamping a glove hand down her mouth (12). He proceeded to brutally rape her, with a knife at her throat. Im afraid of knives. I told him, l cant relax until you put it down. Can you put it outside? On my car? (15-16). Jennifer stayed as calm as possible, trying to remember as many details about her assailant as she could, until she managed to escape. She tried staying calm and having conversations with this man and stayed calm the entire time. When she had the chance and knew he wasnt there she began to run and was shouting for help. As she ran screaming to the top of her lungs a nice family opened the door and let her in. They took care of Jennifer and took her to the hospital. Through an inept summary and analysis of Picking Cotton, readers will be able to understand key points throughout the book, and determine why or why not they should pursue reading the book. After Jennifer got out of the hospital police were all over her case they detectives wanted to find out who would do such a thing? So the police would have to take Jennifer down to the police department where she would meet with Detectives. As she got to the police department Jennifer went down to meet a sketch artist. Once the sketch was done, the lead detective on her case was Detective Gauldin. Detective Gauldin decided that it would be best if the department released the sketch on the local news. Jenifer was told, Detective Gauldin is going to lay down six photos of black male for you to look at. The suspect may or may not be included in these (32). As Jennifer looked at a few sketches she narrowed it down to two sketches. After she got to see a real picture of these men and she happened to pick the sketch of a man amed Ronald Cotton. Ronald had been in trouble with the police before. Jennifer began to say, When I looked at one photo, the image of the man performing oral sex on me came back so violently I thought I would be sick right there. The memory was to sharp and clear. This is the one, while she was pointing to the picture l think this is the guy. Its him, said Jennifer youre sure? asked Detective Gauldin positive said Jennifer (33). As Jennifer picked out the man who she thought raped her police began to look for evidence. The police department had identified, she icked out the one she recognized the best: Ronald Cotton, who already had a less- than-desirable record with the police. When Cotton was told of the charges, he went to the police station to clear his name, but instead he was arrested. Jennifer had to come fa ce to face with a couple of men selected by the police. When Jennifer walked in all she could think about was what would he do to her if he saw her pick him. Jennifer began to say in fear If he was here, now he knew what I looked like in broad Jenifer picked out Ronald Cotton Just like the sketch and picture. The detectives began to ask her Did he beat you? hey asked cut you? When I shook my head up, they shrugged. They were sorry it happened to me, but it Just didnt seem like that big a deal, because it was Just sex (39). Ronald Cotton was found guilty on January 18th, 1985 and sentenced to life in prison plus fifty years, on charges of first-degree breaking and entering and first-degree sexual assault. On top of all the things going on in her life Jennifers love life wasnt going to well either. Jennifer and Paul started to drastically separate slowly. They got into a huge argument over the rape. Their relationship changed so much after Jennifer had been raped. Paul wanted her to move back into town and Jennifer couldnt she never wanted to go back there. Paul wasnt very understanding about it. Jennifer stated, The relationship ended then, although we would continue to pretend it hadnt for several more months (40). DNA testing and eyewitness results can really show a lot and prove that someone really is innocent. Ronald did not really do this crime, and he was living in prison for a crime he did not commit. Keeping faith in God, Cotton underwent an eleven-year ordeal, being transferred from prison to prison. In prison he met a fellow inmate, incarcerated for the same crimes. His name was Bobby Poole, and he even resembled Cotton in appearance. Cotton requested that he and Poole go back to court to appeal his innocence. Jennifer, along with another woman who was raped the same night, again chose Cotton as her rapist and he was sentenced to two life sentences plus fifty-four years. As Cotton languished in prison, Jennifer remained tormented by the image of her attacker. She was eventually able to settle down and marry a man named Vinny. But right as she began to get comfortable, she was informed Cotton had requested a DNA test. Still confident that he was guilty, she agreed. A few weeks later Cotton was freed, after eleven long years in prison; it was Bobby Pooles DNA found in her rape kit, and Poole had confessed to the crimes. Jennifer was devastated, but she decided she wanted to meet Cotton. Ronald Cotton agreed to meet Jennifer at a church and, miraculously, forgave her. Since then, theyVe formed an unlikely friendship and have started travelling across the country advocating actual innocence investigation, hoping to prevent the Justice system from repeating the mistakes of their case. This rape truly impacted Jennifers life in many ways; such s she couldnt control her actions. For instance, she wasnt satisfied with herself and made poor decisions like drinking and doing drugs. Jennifer says, There wasnt much I could control about the way my life was going, but I could control whether I let my rage get the best of me (118). Jennifer tried to change her life around and she started to attend church. At the end when Ronald got released, they met at a church where Jennifer apologized to him. Jennifers father really got onto her about praying. Jennifer says My father and Diane were always on me to go to take up prayer (119). I would truly recommend this book to anyone because the story behind this book is so impacting and touching. You get to truly hear a story that you probably will never hear anywhere else. This book is very fascinating and leaves you speechless; by the time youre done with it all you can do is wonder and think wow I didnt know that could happen. You realize how anyone can make a mistake and how the eyewitness tests work and showed how many prisoners today could also not have committed a police, Judges and detectives that he was an innocent man through DNA and eyewitness testing. I dont think there has ever been a time that someone was able to get away and show they were innocent after being convicted and accused with what Ronald was accused of. The DNA testing showed that Ronald was innocent and the Bobby Poole did this. It is so interesting to see how something like this can occur and how identical these two men look. Jennifer was so sure that Ronald had raped her. She told the police and detectives that she was one hundred percent sure. It is truly incredible to see how our memory can even play games with us. Humans arent perfect and we think we know what we saw but our minds can play games. When Jennifer was told that she was wrong and that she picked the wrong person was probably very hard for her. I cant even imagine what went through her head when she heard Cotton didnt do the crime she thought he committed. When reading this, you Just want to keep reading to find out what happens to Ronald it is very interesting and catching. When finished with the book you think to yourself, my goodness it makes me so happy he is finally shown innocent. Then it warms your heart to know that Ronald and Jennifer become really close friends after all this that happened.

3 Prominent Themes Found in William Shakespeares Othello

3 Prominent Themes Found in William Shakespeares Othello In Shakespeares Othello, themes are essential to the working of the play. The text is a rich tapestry of plot, character, poetry, and theme – elements which come together to form one of the Bards most engaging tragedies. Othello  Theme 1: Race Shakespeare’s Othello is a Moor, a black man - indeed, one of the first black heroes in English literature. The play deals with interracial marriage. Others have a problem with it, but Othello and Desdemona are happily in love. Othello holds an important position of power and influence. He has been accepted into Venetian society based on his bravery as a soldier. Iago uses Othello’s race to ridicule and belittle him, at one point calling him â€Å"thick lips†. Othello’s insecurities surrounding his race ultimately lead to his belief that Desdemona is having an affair. As a black man, he doesn’t feel he is worthy of his wife’s attention or that he has been embraced by Venetian society. Indeed, Brabanzio is unhappy about his daughter’s choice of suitor, due to his race. He is quite happy to have Othello regale stories of bravery to him but when it comes to his daughter, Othello is not good enough. Brabanzio is convinced that Othello has used trickery to get Desdemona to marry him: â€Å"O thou damned thief, where hast thou stowed my daughter? Damned as thou art, thou hast enchanted her, For I’ll refer me to all things of sense, If she in chains of magic were not bound, Whether a maid so tender, fair, and happy, So opposite to marriage that she shunned The wealthy curled darlings of our nation, Would ever have t’incur a general mock, Run from her guardage to the sooty bosom Of such a thing as thou†Brabanzio: Act 1 Scene 3. Othello’s race is an issue for Iago and Brabanzio but, as an audience, we are rooting for Othello, Shakespeare’s celebration of Othello as a black man is ahead of its time, the play encourages the audience to side with him and take against the white man who is mocking him just because of his race. Othello Theme 2: Jealousy The story of Othello is propelled by feelings of intense jealousy. All of the action and consequences that unfold are the result of jealousy. Iago is jealous of Cassio’s appointment as lieutenant over him, he also believes that Othello has had an affair with Emilia, his wife, and harbors plans for revenge on him as a result. Iago also appears to be envious of Othello’s standing in Venetian society; despite his race, he has been celebrated and accepted in society. Desdemona’s acceptance of Othello as a worthy husband demonstrates this and this acceptance is due to Othello’s valor as a soldier, Iago is envious of Othello’s position. Roderigo is jealous of Othello because he is in love with Desdemona. Roderigo is essential to the plot, his actions act as a catalyst in the narrative. It is Roderigo who goads Cassio into the fight which loses him his job, Roderigo attempts to kill Cassio so that Desdemona stays in Cyprus and eventually Roderigo exposes Iago. Iago convinces Othello, erroneously, that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Othello reluctantly believes Iago but is finally convinced of his wife’s betrayal. So much so that he kills her. Jealousy leads to Othello’s degradation and ultimate downfall. Othello Theme 3: Duplicity â€Å"Certain, men should be what they seem†Othello: Act 3, Scene 3 Unfortunately for Othello, the man who he trusts in the play, Iago, is not what he seems he is scheming, duplicitous and has a deep malevolent loathing for his master. Othello is made to believe that Cassio and Desdemona are the duplicitous ones. This mistake of judgment leads to his downfall. Othello is prepared to believe Iago over his own wife because of his faith in his servant’s honesty; â€Å"This fellow’s of exceeding honesty† (Othello, Act 3 Scene 3). He doesn’t see any reason why Iago might double cross him. Iago’s treatment of Roderigo is also duplicitous, treating him as a friend or at least a comrade with a common goal, only to kill him in order to cover up his own guilt. Fortunately, Roderigo was savvier to Iago’s duplicity than he knew, hence the letters exposing him. Emilia could be accused of duplicity in exposing her own husband. However, this endears her to the audience and demonstrates her honesty in that she has discovered her husband’s wrongdoings and is so outraged that she exposes him.

Greek Mythologys Hercules in Films Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Greek Mythologys Hercules in Films - Essay Example With the different depictions of Hercules, this paper then is an assessment on how he was portrayed and presented in films. The materials considered for this study were Disney's animated film "Hercules" released on 1997 and Roger Young's miniseries entitled "Hercules. Half Man. Half God. All Power." released on 2004 by the Hallmark Channel. According to the Big Cartoon Database (n.d.) "Hercules" was a "Disney update on classic mythology", an animated film about his journey towards finding a place where he belonged. Here, Hercules, the son of Greek gods Zeus and Hera was born god-like strength in Olympus, the home of the gods. When Hades, the God of the Underworld, learns that his plan of domination in the future will be affected because of Hercules' existence, he summons his two followers, Pain and Panic, de-immortalize the child Hercules and kill him in the mortal world. Pain and Panic, failed in their mission and only succeeds in making Hercules mortal. No mortal beings are allowed to dwell in Olympus, which leaves Hercules in the care of Alcmene and Amphitryon, the childless mortal couple who found him on the bushes. Hercules later grows into a misfit adolescent because of his extraordinary strength that always gets him in the center of chaos. His adoptive parents later tells him of his past and a medal found with him that is a link to Zeus, his father. Hercules then journeys to the temple of the gods. Zeus appears and confirms Hercules thoughts. Zeus tells him that the only way that Hercules can enter Olympus again is that if he becomes an earthly hero to gain his godliness. The adolescent Hercules then goes on a pursuit of a hero status with the help and instructions from the satyr, Philoctetes. He achieves the hero status later in adulthood but is perplexed because he still is not a god. When Hades learns that Hercules still lives, he orders his soul-bound follower Megara to deceive Hercules. Hades tries to block his path to being a God with calamities and creatures like the multi-headed, Hydra. Hercules becomes a God when he sacrifices himself for Megara. The animated film ends with Hercules choosing to stay in the mortal world to be with Megara. The most obvious difference of the animated film from the original Greek myth of Hercules is that the dreadful factors of his origins were revised and some components of modern day popular culture were utilized. According to Royalty.nu (n.d.), Hercules was born to Alcmene, wife of Amphityron, but fathered by the Greek God Zeus. Zeus deceived Alcmene into thinking that he was Amphitryon on a night when the real Amphitryon was away. Hera, Zeus' wife loathed Hercules and tried several times to try and kill Hercules, much unlike in the animated film, where Hera as Hercules' mother doted on him. The animated film focused on Hercules' early life; the famous ten labors of Hercules and the other half of his life was not included. The circumstances of the Greek myth characters like Megara, Zeus, Hera, Aphitryon, Alcmene and the rest included in the film were greatly modified to fit the storyline of the animated film. Apart from that Hercules' twin brother, Iphicles was excluded in the
